The art of letting go

This Sunday brings something truly extraordinary – a Full Corn Moon in Pisces accompanied by a total lunar eclipse on September 7th. For those of us walking the yoga path and seeking to align with lunar rhythms, this celestial event offers profound opportunities for inner transformation and spiritual awakening.

Faversham moon yoga

Ancient yogis have long recognised the moon as our celestial teacher, its waxing and waning cycles mirroring the natural rhythms of breath, energy, and consciousness that flow through our practice.

When ancient rivers flow together

There's something beautiful about how wisdom streams converge. The Western sky-watchers speak of Pisces' watery depths, where intuition swims free and emotions flow like sacred rivers. Here, the eclipse becomes a doorway – not just closing one chapter, but dissolving the very pages so something entirely new can be written.

Meanwhile, in the ancient Vedic understanding, this same celestial dance whispers of Maya – the beautiful, bewildering illusion that clouds our vision until moments like these arrive. The sages knew that when the moon surrenders to shadow, we too are invited to surrender – to mantra, to meditation, to the charity of releasing what we've outgrown.

Two traditions, separated by continents and centuries, yet both pointing to the same truth: this cosmic moment asks us to dive deeper than we've dared before.

The shadow's gift

This transformative lunar eclipse can stir up stagnant energies and shine a light of awareness into your blindspots. As our beautiful moon turns a deep copper red – earning its name as a "blood moon" – we're reminded that sometimes we must embrace the shadow to find the light.

In yoga philosophy, we call this process tapas – the burning away of what isn't essential. Just as the Earth's shadow transforms the moon's appearance, this eclipse invites us to examine what shadows we've been carrying and what's ready to be released.

Preparing your practice

The days leading up to Sunday's eclipse are perfect for gentle, introspective practices:

Moon Salutations (Chandra Namaskara) – Flow with the lunar energy rather than the solar intensity of sun salutations. Move slowly, breathe deeply, and honour your body's need for gentleness.

Yin Yoga and Restorative Poses – Hold poses longer, allowing your nervous system to settle. Hip openers like Pigeon pose can help release stored emotions, while supported Child's pose offers a safe space to turn inward.

Meditation and Pranayama – Vedic wisdom suggests keeping plans simple during eclipse time, making this perfect for quiet contemplation. Try Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) to balance your energy.

Embracing the Piscean waters

With this eclipse happening in Pisces, we're called to trust our intuition above all else. Pisces energy flows like water – it doesn't force its way through obstacles but finds the natural path. This weekend, notice where you've been pushing against the current in your life.

Perhaps it's time to surrender a relationship that's run its course, release a limiting belief about yourself, or simply let go of the need to control every outcome. This Eclipse reminds us to trust in the natural unfolding of events and encourages us to allow ourselves to be guided by our intuition.

Your eclipse ritual

Create a simple ritual for Sunday evening. Light a candle, sit quietly with your journal, and ask yourself:

  • What am I ready to release?

  • What patterns no longer serve my highest good?

  • How can I trust the process of transformation?

Remember, eclipse energy continues to work for weeks after the event itself. Be patient with yourself and trust that what needs to emerge will do so in divine timing.

If you'd like to honour this eclipse energy in community, join me on Sunday 7th September 2025 at 6pm at Actively Alive Yoga Studio (Faversham) for a gentle, moon-aligned practice designed to support your journey of release and renewal.

As we move through this powerful lunar eclipse together, may we remember that every ending creates space for a new beginning. In the darkness of the eclipse, we find the seeds of our next chapter.

The moon doesn't fight the shadow – it allows the transformation and emerges renewed. So too can we.
